Is Hillary Finished?
Conventional wisdom and the numbers say no.
Barack Obama’s lead in delegates still isn’t that big, and two favorable states for Clinton - Ohio and Texas - are looming on March 4.
Then again, Barack Obama continues to defy the hopes of even his ardent supporters, posting double-digit wins and making our predictions - like the upset win for Hillary we saw coming last night - look foolish.
The Illinois senator has also crushed Clinton in 10 straight contests with from women and working-class voters - the Clinton base of campaign strength for so long - casting doubt upon a possible comeback.
Every presidential race has its breaking point, the Baltimore Sun’s Paul West notes, and this Democratic contest is fast approaching it.
Hillary Clinton can downplay expectations and focus on Texas and Ohio all she wants, but the previous 10 primaries do, in fact, matter.
Her candidacy, therefore, hangs by a thread.
Her notion/strategy that Democrats in Wisconsin, a big Midwestern state, are so different than Ohio, another big Midwestern state, and that she can ignore one and win big in the other, strikes us as odd and unrealistic.
Of course, momentum is just momentum if it doesn’t translate to wins. There are things that could still swing things in Clinton’s favor:
- A sudden event that causes voters to change their opinion of Obama. We wouldn’t count on it, but stranger things have happened.
- Media scrutiny of Obama becoming more harsh — front-runners typically get more of it, and Hillary can attack more overtly. The speechgate “scandal” didn’t sway Wisconsin voters, however.
- Buyer’s remorse. Like the purchase of one’s first home, a race sometimes enters a contrary phase in which voters sour on a candidate once he or she is perceived as inevitable. Again, unlikely, as state after state seems to really want Barack Obama.

even if obama is hit by scandal or voters sour on him, it still cannot equal the shameful behavior of the clintons. so if something happens to obama, i (like many i think) will either vote for McCain or not vote at all. i cannot under any circumstances give my vote to hillary, even though i was once upon a time a big fan of hers.
