Please Welcome Back: The Republican Scare Tactics!

After a brief layoff, fear-mongering is back in full effect!

President George W. Bush did not name Sen. Barack Obama by name, but it’s undeniable that his remarks today were aimed at the Democratic Party’s likely presidential candidate and others.

The thinly-veiled attack Thursday was made by Bush in Jerusalem, where he was marking the 60th anniversary of Israel’s sovereignty, but went so far as to suggest that Democrats actually favor the “appeasement” of terrorists.

NOTE #1: For some perspective, this is not only the least popular president in U.S. history talking, but a man who believes the best show of solidarity with troops sent to wage an unnecessary war is to quit golf.

Bush in Israel

“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,” Bush said, speaking to Israel’s parliament, the Knesset.

“As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

Doubts about Obama with Jewish Americans were stoked earlier this month by Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee-to-be in the 2008 race, who dubiously called Obama the “favored candidate” of Hamas.

NOTE #2: Top fear-mongering of the year honors still go to Mitt Romney, who said upon halting his White House bid: “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”

Last week, Barack Obama called McCain’s Hamas allegation a “smear” against him, and today, he lashed out at Bush’s speech in Israel.

“It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel’s independence to launch a false political attack,” Obama said.

“George Bush knows I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the president’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.”

NOTE #3: Obama is not without his own gaffe of sorts today, having called a female reporter “sweetie.” He later apologized.

What do you think? Do these comments by Bush-McCain cross the line?

George Bush, you have made our enemies stronger. No thinking national secuity hawk could support you.

Are you worried about what Iran will do next in Iraq? Well, Iran wasn’t in Iraq until you invaded. You have made our enemy Iran stronger.

Will al Qaeda in Iraq regroup? Well, al Qaeda wasn’t in Iraq until you invaded. You have made our enemy al Qaeda stronger.

Concerned about the spread of radical fundamentalist Islam? Iraq was a secular state before you invaded - now 40% of the country is under Sharia law. You have made our enemy radical Islam stronger.

Frightened by North Korea’s nuclear arsenal? Before you played Cowboy Diplomacy, they had one to two nuclear bombs worth of plutonium. Now they have eight to eleven. You have made our enemy Kim Jong Il stronger.

Barack: enough of this “I am not an appeaser” BS. Step forward and say: “On every front, Republican actions have made our enemies stronger. No thinking national security hawk could support them.”

  4. Totoro Says:

Bush tends to use scare tactics, true enough. But the fact is that Obama is wrong here, he has said that he would like to meet with people like Kim Jong-il, Hugo Chavez, and some of the other less than stable state sponsors of terrorism. That is simply a bad idea, even I know that, and it scares me that I have more sense than the democratic front runner for the office of president. I voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary and I stand by my choice. Hillary has shown solidarity with Obama on this, but make no mistake, the lady would never make the silly mistake that Mr. Obama has here.

  5. WOW totoro Says:

    Good God Totoro….

You know, I understand Hillary Supporters feel real strong about Hillary, for the life of me I have no idea why, but you Hillary supporters really need to learn to realize when its over.

1 of 2 things will happen.

    1. Obama will get the nomination, and most likely win, because the Repubs have the worst odds in a LONG time.

    OR

    2. Hillary will some how convince the Super D’s to elect her, which will destroy the Dem party. Do you really want to lose 95% of your black voters because Clinton’s un-ending ego wont let logic enter her mind? Do you really want the Repubs to have the ultimate ammo for decades to come, Dems are racist and use black people for votes without caring about them? Its what will happen if you people dont give up.

Sorry Hillary. You tried to run on your name, and only realized way to late that it was not gonna work, and don’t tell me that was not the plan all along. She bit her tongue, and took her Husbands cheating like a champ, because she new the whole time that she would benefit from having him around.
