What’s Next For Hillary?
Democratic leaders have addressed the lingering issue of the rogue Florida and Michigan primaries, but the saga is far from over.
Both states will send delegates to the August convention in Denver after all, albeit with half the votes each instead of full ones each.
The decision preserved the bulk of Sen. Barack Obama’s lead over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, now 2,070-1,915, with 2,118 needed to win.
But supporters of Clinton are particularly angry that the Michigan decision gave her rival, Obama, delegates they believe he did not earn.
If significant numbers of Clinton supporters remain angry and unwilling to vote for Obama, the likely nominee, his prospects for election in November could be damaged. The question is how Senator Clinton handles herself going forward.
She won Sunday’s Democratic primary in Puerto Rico, posting another huge margin of victory - 34 percent and 140,000 votes - but there is likely nothing she can do to halt Obama’s momentum toward the nomination.
Clinton also claims a lead in the overall popular vote this primary season, though that is a highly questionable statement, as it requires counting the banned primaries in both Florida and Michigan, while at the same time not counting several caucus states where results have not been tabulated:
- If the Florida primary is counted, but not Michigan, where Obama did not appear on the ballot, and no caucuses, he leads 17,389,116-17,364,592.
- If all primary results including Florida and Michigan are counted, and not the caucus votes, Clinton leads the popular vote 17,461,845-17,244,762.
- A second scenario, which counts both of the barred primaries but adds an estimate of caucus-goers, Obama leads Clinton 17,961,368-17,916,763.
In short, it’s historically and remarkably close - but Clinton is skating on perilously thin ice in trumpeting her popular vote argument.
Montana and South Dakota close out the primary season tomorrow. Polling is sparse, but given what data we have, and Obama’s past success in the west, we expect him to win both states by relatively easy margins.
After the Puerto Rico victory, Clinton said she will take the race for the Democratic presidential nomination “a day at a time” and is reviewing all options as she moves forward in her historic, but turbulent campaign.
What’s her next move? That, perhaps only the Senator herself knows. But a handful of Hillary Clinton quotes yesterday and in recent days make it all too clear that she has no intention of bowing out gracefully.

All I can say is “keep going Clinton”. You have every right to do so. However, do us all a favor. If you lose the nomination, which is most likely, please try to convince the 1/3 of your supporters [the ones that threaten to vote for McCain should Obama win the nomination] that this country is in dire need of a Democrat and that 4 more years of Bush is not an option.
June 2nd, 2008 at 7:49 am
We are not going to have 4 more years of Bush. We will have 4 years of Mccain. Mccain and Bush don’t even like each other, there relationship is a matter of political convenience. Once Mccain has the votes of those who support Bush, he will go toward a direction that is best for the people. Clinton should quit and go home a wash some dishes. Women have no place in politics. They will always be 2nd class citizens. The votes that clinton has won and the states she has won don’t matter. The votes of the old, uneducated, latinos, and women don’t matter. Obama supporters don’t need the support of Clinton’s supporters.
June 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 am
Senator Clinton sounds day by day more and more like Lopez Obrador (the Mexican presidential contender). She doesn’t seem to get that the people has spoken and the people’s choice is Senator Barak Obama. Her “democracy” is faulty: it is NOT what she thinks what is most important, is what the majority of people think what is most important… that’s the way democracy works! Maybe she’ll get it some day, or maybe she’ll cry for a long time becoming the Lopez Obrador of the USA!
June 2nd, 2008 at 9:12 am
Hillary is playing so dirty right now, and she has been for the most part since this campaigning began. She and her husband are both showing their true faces and should I also say their true colors. I wouldn’t be surprized to find out that they paid people in a lot of the states to vote for her, especially Puerto Rico. The Clinton’s are ruthless, we’ve had enough of their types running this country, the very reason this country is in the condition it’s in now. There is no doubt in my mind that if the situation was reversed and Obama was the one trailing Clinton, this would have been over months ago. America needs to take a cold, hard look at themselves and their policies and see how the color of one’s skin plays a role in almost everything that is done in this country. They’ve allowed her to cheat…not to compete.
June 2nd, 2008 at 9:19 am
All I can say is keep it up Hilary, so McCain can win in November. She is just an overgrown adult with a tantrum, that cannot get over the idea of losing! She cannot play by the rules that were established and just wants to keep changing them. So now that Florida and Michigan will get half a vote, that is not enough. Like a small child “I want more” (crying tantrum). Maybe, someone should spank her or put her in the corner for a timeout session till November.
“Grow up”!
June 2nd, 2008 at 9:19 am
I recall a video on “The Onion” a while back, where someone was saying “Hillary Clinton is not about to give up… just because she lost. She will go to the end… and she will act surprised.”
Little did I know at the time that this would amount to more than satire.
June 2nd, 2008 at 9:19 am
Will someone with some intelligence please tell Hillary that it is all over. Her entire support group continues to read a fairy tale in which she wins. Even if Obama was not in the race, someone else would be beating her. She and her husband are not as popular as they once were. There is a great deal of anomosity toward the Clinton’s based upon their political style and joint ego which is resulting in voting for the other guy. Another woman, not Ferraro, would have been a better candidate.
Clinton and her rhetoric has done more harm to the Democrats during this primary. She has lied, or “mis-spoke” and had to recant on so many occasions. Her rosey colored glasses see life as an entitlment to become the next president. She and the Democratic party had better get real or many of us independents will vote for McBush as a lesser of evils. And as for the Women that follow her like lemmings, shame. I always give women credit for their intelligence and strength but to follow her on the basis that she is a woman rather than her character is down right stupid.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:00 am
So Hillary wins again by 36%.
Shouldn’t you be concerned?
These are huge majorities for her and very late in the game.
Notwithstanding that all of her victories are unimportant for whatever reason or that those who don’t vote for your man are racists and those who do vote for him are enlightened.
I get all that.
Heard it over & over.
Because it’s happened over & over.
Been a long time now since this man looked like a winner.
He’s sitting on 92% of the Black vote and no matter what the media says, that’s just not right.
Doesn’t sound balanced.
Not for a candidate who preaches unity.
She now has the majority vote & the least pledged delegates.
I know. That’s fine too because Obama is your choice but 36%?
Again?
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 am
Pride cometh before the fall.
Using Clinton math does not benefit her as it appears too much like “just another tactic.”
The three Clintons should be way far out ahead of Obama if they are as popular as they think they are.
Obama can beat McCain just as easily as she can based on recent polls in California and Texas where it shows that he would have won those states handily if the voting were done today.
We tend to forget that a portion of her votes are from “Operation Chaos” and part are from crying “sexism” which are sympathy votes as of late. Those won’t be a part of Obama’s general election campaign.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:09 am
I have been wondering through this process, if Hillary Clinton does become POTUS, does she have to take a reduced salary, since women still do not have equal pay in this country? I also am not surprised at the decision reached by the Democratic Party Rules Committee … if you vote for a woman, you will only be represented with half a vote. What sense does that make? Who says this country has arrived in the 21st century? I believe Senator Clinton should go all the way to the convention - she has more than earned her way into the “Good Old Boys Club”. This country deserves to have a solid leader - the best person for the job may be a WOMAN!
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:18 am
The people’s choice was George W. Bush, and look where that got us. If you look at it that that way, then the people’s voices were heard and they chose Bush. So let’s follow the people’s choice and see what happens next.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:39 am
A word of advice for Hilary. Leave your party. They don’t need you and your supporters. The votes of your supporters hasn’t helped you so far and they won’t help Obama either. Leave the Democratic party now and don’t look back.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:42 am
The Obama people have been trying to get Hillary to quit since for ever. That is Chicago dirty politics, which Obama practices. She does have every right to take it to the convention and FIGHT for the nomination. That is what the convention is for. Every candidate who has dropped has made that decision, NOT THE OPPOSITION TELLING THEM THAT THEY MUST. Such a concept is not democratic and a farce to the voters. I really dislike the Obama camp for that. Those people play very dirty. What kind of president he’ll ever make?
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 am
My wife and I were Clinton supporters right up until Harold Ickes threatened the DNC.
I was embarrassed for the party, for Howard Dean - whose opening statement was very clearly against such ’scorched earth’ policies - and for the Clinton campaign to make Saturday about taking the lead in the campaign rather than about making votes count - which she did by refusing Obama’s 50/50 split offer - was disgusting.
We see now, that a high road in politics is possible, and that Hillary and her campaign made Saturday’s DNC meeting into everything we dislike about politics. Hillary represents to us everything that has disenfranchised Americans from participating in this process.
What the campaign did this weekend was turn-off voters like my wife and I, and I would not be surprised if the Clinton’s ultimately turn off millions from the Democratic party.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:47 am
Paul in Miami - can you provide one bit of evidence that ‘Obama people’ have ever tried to get Hillary out of the race?
Didn’t think so.
You’re acting like a little child with your baseless accusations.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:48 am
Obviously, my America is confused. An individual’s vote has NEVER counted towards selecting a President. That’s right. Presidential elections are not decided by the number of votes. It never has been. Voting is part of the Presidential election PROCESS. The collective individual vote is not considered. This is nothing new. For example, Al Gore received more VOTES than George W. Bush in the 2000 election. The process, however, made George W. Bush the President. Why? Because the popular vote is IRRELEVANT in presidential elections.
What happened in this year’s Democratic nomination is part of the PROCESS of selecting the Democratic nominee. The Republicans have a similar PROCESS. It is NOT about vote count. It never has been. It is, however, about delegates.
When the general election comes, it’s not about VOTES. It’s about the Electoral College and the number of Electoral College representatives that a state contains. Generally, U.S. citizens cast votes for electoral college representatives, known as electors. Electors can vote for the candidate of their choosing.
Understand. Neither the Republican nor the Democratic candidate will campaign for your VOTE in the general election. They will campaign for your STATE because that’s what matters in the general.
McCain doesn’t care about YOU. Clinton doesn’t care about YOU. (Personally, I think she’s still campaigning to recoup some of the $20 million of PERSONAL money she invested in her campaign.) Obama doesn’t care about YOU. They care about your STATE.
It’s incorrect to say that “Every Vote Should Count.” Votes count in establishing the PROCESS. The PROCESS elects the President. On a personal note, it’s IRRESPONSIBLE for any presidential candidate to lead Americans to believe the notion that ALL votes count towards the final tally.
For those that will make the move to the Republican Party, IT WORKS THE SAME WAY. You will not run from the PROCESS because you party switch. We, as Americans, need to understand our PROCESS for selecting the President of the United States better. If you want the PROCESS changed, talk to your Congressman.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:49 am
This is a lady that wrote Senators Oboma’s obituary while he is still alive. She essentially orders a hit on him. Now, she is calming her chance of wining this race is not over yet. Get a life lady, impeach yourself Liar.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:53 am
I thank God I’m not like you guys. I believe that women are total equals in this country as us men are. I believe that black people are total equals as us whites are.
Am I a sexist just because I don’t support Clinton? Heck no! Had a better woman stood up to a plate besides Hillary, I would’ve for that better woman besides Obama.
And had I not voted for Obama, would that make me racist? NO Fracking Way! I have cousins and uncles who are black. And I think one of them was born in Cuba.
Heck, I would even vote for Arnold Schwartzeneiger had congress ammended a new rule to allow foreigners to run. Have you seen how he ran California recently? He’s even liked by both parties. It’s such a shame he couldn’t run for office.
What’s my point? Don’t let personal feelings get in the way of what’s really important for this country. There are far more important things to resolve than solving an issue as pointless as trying to seat the FL and MI delegates whose states have broken the rules on purpose. Let’s get this over with, and make sure that a Republican never sits on that big and fancy chair in the Oval office ever again.
June 2nd, 2008 at 10:54 am
Go home Hillary!
Everyone is tired of Hillary. She should concede. All the talk of she being a super politician is nonsense. With the powerful Clinton machine setup by Bill Clinton, Hillary was in a formidable position at the beginning. Without Bill Hillary is nothing. She made a nuisance of herself during the campaign. New Yorkers will throw her out next time she is up for her Senatorial reelection. Her political life is finished.
June 2nd, 2008 at 11:01 am
I’m from Buffalo where Hillary promised us jobs when she was running for Senate - and conveniently blamed Al Gore for not fulfilling her promise during the MSNBC debate.
She’s got a big surprise waiting for her when she returns to New York.
My middle finger extended in her general direction.
June 2nd, 2008 at 11:19 am
Seems a bit twisted to think that she’s ready to argue that she has the popular vote and that the people should pick the nominee, so SUPERDELEGATES should essentially withhold the nomination from the candidate who not only *leads* in pledged delegates, but who has actually captured the *majority* of pledged delegates - I could have sworn those were supposed to reflect the will of the voters. At least, that was her plan up until she was losing.
An Obama-Clinton ticket would be beneficial for reconciling the fractured halves of the Democratic Party (I’m an independent), but I’m really not sure how she intends to respond when her opponents revisit the multitude of divisive, undermining, and questionable assertions she’s made about Obama over the last 15 months. Personally, I think she’s run a despicable campaign and would do well to mind her words and actions if she cares anything for the remainder of her political career (especially in the Senate).
June 2nd, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hey Florida - count every vote. Including the one where you voted to move the primary up and jeopardize counting your ability to vote in the primary.
Then change your name to Eastern Alabama.
June 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Its time for Hillary to be a great leader and get out the race after June 3rd. Show American that, this is not about you but the will of the people. More states have voted for Obama, He leads in the national polls. We know that you are a fighter but,we need you to fight for Obama to win the white house for our democratic party. This will not be giving up, you be doing what is right for our party.
UNITY WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL
June 2nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Time for the Super Delegates to grow some gonads.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Time for the Democratic Party to find a better way of electing their delegates.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Time for the Democratic Party to find a better way of electing their delegates. It was their process of dividing up the delegates that got them in this mess in the first place. If they can’t come together and pick a delegate because of all this mess, what makes you think that they will be able to run this country in an orderly fashion. They control the majority of Congress and they still haven’t got anything done. McCain would make a better president then either of them. The republicans are already ahead of the Democrats in every respect. I was a Hilary supporter know I am giving my support to Mccain.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Joe - go ahead and send your kids and grandkids to Iraq and get it over with. You’ll be doing the world a favor and pruning that family tree before its too late.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
If a super delegate picks a candidate that my state did not pick. I will give my support to Mccain. I don’t want a super delegate going against my wishes. I know that the majority of the Superdelegates whose states chose Clinton will go over to Obama, and if that happens the voice of the people were not heard and I have already decided that my vote will go to Mccain.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Me and my kids have already been to Iraq and came back. My inlaws are over there. It’s safer know than it was with Hussein.
June 2nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Those superdelegates that are in elected office that have voted for a candidate that was not chosen by their state come election time get ready to pack you bags. We know who you are and we will run you out of office.
June 2nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
I think this goes a bit deeper, and is not merely a question of some supporters being ‘a bit confused.’
If the best arguments given to Clinton supporters for voting for Obama are rooted in of fear of what McCain would do as president, that’s not really a vote FOR Obama, it’s a vote AGAINST McCain. Similarly, some people are voting AGAINST Hillary, not FOR Obama. Some may call that semantics, but voting for “Change for the sake of change” is how Germany got someone like Hitler - change is necessary, BO and HCR supporters agree on that, but change TOWARD WHAT is a very important point. Obama may be a great Democrat and a great leader, but then why hasn’t he been able to capture most of Hillary’s base? Those people aren’t going away in and after November, so will he just ignore them (like Bush does)?
It’s a little like someone giving you the choice between being fed and being sheltered. The conversation might go:
“Well, I don’t want either.”
“Too bad, you have no choice.”
“I refuse - and you need to stick around, so give me another option.”
“We don’t need you, take a hike.”
It’s practically a dare.
If Hillary supporters feel powerless to influence their own party, a natural reaction is to bind together to show they are valuable and powerful. The idea is to get the party’s attention. This calls for a tough choice - support a candidate you vehemently hate (McCain), or cast your vote the way you were told, little girl. President Wilson would have a few words of wisdom for those who would take on women in a game of political chicken.
In many cases, Hillary supporters are identifying with her as a woman - they see her getting beat down, being told to ’sit down and shut up’ and it strikes a chord deep inside. They consider that no woman has ever held this office of the highest executive in the United States, and some recall that raise, promotion, job, or commendation that they did not get because they were a woman. One of the more interesting themes of the DNC rally outside the Marriot was the number of women talking about how ‘this isn’t my party, this is not the party i want to belong to’. Almost immediately after these statements came another declaration - not a question, not an idle thought, not even a general hopelessnes or hesitation: “We need a new party.” Maybe this could split the Dems; maybe a lot of Dems will join the Independants.
Either way: Hell hath no fury, and wow are they pissed.
June 2nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I am turning and taking my vote to Mccain. I am tired of being a second class citizen and having my vote not being counted. I will take my vote to Mccain. I am fed up with the Democratic party throwing me aside like I don’t exist. A woman has never been in the Oval office and a woman will never be in the oval office because of the sexism that exist in Congress.
June 2nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Joe - so, you’ve been to Iraq before Hussein was in power? I’ll go ahead and answer that for you - NO.
Here’s the facts Joe - you don’t know your @ss from a hole in the ground and I’ll be damned if some inbred moron like you is going to have an impact on my country. You don’t deserve the right to vote let alone the right to breed.
The Republicans created terrorism in the middle east and for 20 of the last 28 years - have done nothing to resolve the problem but make it worse.
Please - reserve your Fox News talking points for your mind-numb supper table talks over twinkies and cold buds.
June 2nd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Susan - get your house in order, get your will written and say goodbye to your kids.
Voting for McCain will start a war with Iran, Russia, North Korea, Venezula, and China - and you’ll be defending your vote and your stupidity in a pool of your excrement and blood.
June 2nd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
What a bunch of sorry-ass Clinton supporters. I hope you’re the first ones drafted in McCain’s war in Iran.
June 2nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm
You don’t think the Democrats have had problems with Terrorism or made terrorism worst. Bill Clinton sending troops to Somalia and getting our elite Rangers slammed by Somali militia. Bunch of civilians beating an elite group of soldiers and having them run away like cowards. Is this what you want America to perceived as, a bunch of cowards who when things get tough, go home and cry to their moms. Both parties are equally responsible for the problems involved with the escalation of terrorism. Get your head out of your butt and stop making things worse than it already is.
June 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Lyndon B Johnson (36th President of United States) a democrat was in office from 11/22/63 to 01/20/69
Modern Terrorism began when the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine hijacked an Isreali Airliner on 03/08/68.
So technically Modern Terrorism began with a Democrat.
I’m a Obama supporter, just trying to get the facts straight.
June 2nd, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Both party’s are responsible? Umm - thanks to the supreme political prowless of the Republicans - the Republicans have been in power for all but twelve years in the last three decades.
Americans are ALREADY perceived as weak because we are running away from Bin Laden because of the Bush family business. Bush flew the Bin Laden family OUT of America rather than interrogate them. Christ - I have to tell people I’m a CANADIAN when I travel.
You seem to have a selective memory - Reagan cut and run out of Beirut, created the Bin Laden hatred for America, put Hussein in power, funded Iraq, sold arms to Iran, and continues to provide billions in aid to Saudi Arabia - whom the FBI has called a state sponsor of terror.
Yet - Bush and the Republicans want to argue about abortion.
June 2nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Let’s draw a distinction here between ‘terrorism’ as an act of killing people and ‘terrorism’ as an act of hostility performed by a group of people from the Middle East.
Hijacking and hostages are as much terrorism as the Boston Tea Party.
June 2nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Todd - Don’t forget that it was Johnson who started the ground offensive in Vietnam. By 1968 there were more than 550,000 American troops on the ground. They were being killed at a rate of 1000 per month. So technically Johnson a Democrat was responsible for the escalation of the war in Vietnam.
I too am also an Obama supporter. But you can’t change the facts of history.
June 2nd, 2008 at 4:23 pm
You’re comparing Hijacking and hostages to the Boston Tea Party. The planes that flew into the twin towers were Hijacked and hostages were taken. So what’s the difference. Hijacking and Hostages are as much terrorism as the Boston Tea Party and 911. Give me a break.
June 2nd, 2008 at 6:45 pm
What’s next for Hillary. Since you have counted her out months ago and the so called friends of hers - super-delegates stabbed her in the back. She can go back to the Senate, sit tight, watch Obama lose and be ready for 2012.
All of Hillary supporters have to do, is keep their word and vote for McCain.
June 2nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

It is really sad to see how nasty Obama supporters treat other Americans just because we disagree on their choice. Believe it or not, this is America. Most people aren’t led around by their balls!
June 3rd, 2008 at 12:04 am
She is lying when she says that the pledged vote leader and delegate vote leader have never been different. In 1968 (she should know about that one considering how much she likes to bring it up) it happened in both parties. In fact Hubert Humphrey was 8th in the popular vote (with just 2% of the total vote) but 1st in delegates.
Of course she’s also lying when she says she’s leading in the popular vote.
With Hillary the lies come out so fast it’s hard to keep up with them all.

CAN’T WAIT FOR HILLARY TO BE OUT COMPLETELY. SHE SAYS SHE IS FOR UNITY BUT HER ACTIONS OF PURSING A LOST BATTLE IS ONLY CAUSING DISRUPTION.
THOSE CRYING FOR THE 4 VOTES NEED TO SPEAK TO THEIR STATE AND FIND OUT WHY THEY BROKE THE RULES IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEY WEREN’T EVEN GOING TO HAVE A VOTE BECAUSE OF IT NOT BECAUSE OF OBAMA. THE RULES ARE THE RULES AND THEY WERE ALREADY BENDED SO STOP CRYING OVER SPILT MILK.
I AM SO TIRED, AND I CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN HOW TIRED I AM OF HEARING ABOUT HILLARY’S CRYING AND FIGHTING OVER A LOST BATTLE.
