Bio

Kevin Maurice Johnson is a retired point guard who played for the NBA's Phoenix Suns, and who is running for mayor in his hometown of Sacramento, California.

Johnson was born and raised in Sacramento and attended Sacramento High School where he starred in both basketball and baseball all four years, leading the state in scoring as a senior.

KJ starred at the University of California before being drafted by Cleveland and traded to the Phoenix Suns. He was a bona fide NBA star, a frequent all-star from 1987-2000.

As president and CEO of The Kevin Johnson Corporation, Kevin Johnson oversees operations of several subsidiary organizations specializing in real estate development and management, sports management, and business acquisition.

Kevin Johnson founded the St. Hope Academy in 1989 and served as CEO until January 2008. St. HOPE is a nonprofit community development corporation that seeks to revitalize communities through public education, civic leadership, economic development and the arts.

In 2003, St. HOPE formed St. HOPE Public Schools, a pre-K-12 independent charter school system that provides high quality education to nearly 1,000 students in seven small schools.

KJ is a 2000 graduate of the Harvard Divinity School Summer Leadership Institute, a program that prepares students for work in faith-based urban economic revitalization.
