Down-Home Wedding Day For Jenna Bush, Henry Hager

Jenna Bush and Henry Hager are officially married as of Saturday, in a day marking the first wedding of a daughter of a sitting president in 16 years.

The most recent was the first President Bush’s daughter, Dorothy - Jenna’s aunt - who tied the knot in 1992. This wedding was a bit different.

Away from the spotlight, the Jenna Bush-Henry Hager wedding reflected their penchant for privacy and preference for the casual over grandiose.

Crawford, Texas

The down-home setting was a lakeside ceremony at President Bush’s secluded 1,600-acre Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Jenna Bush just couldn’t see herself getting married at the White House surrounded by antique furniture and oil portraits of presidents.

In Crawford, the corn is thigh-high, roads are named Cattle Drive and the Texas flag is painted on the rooftops of barns.

Bush Chides Celebs, Candidates, Self at Press Gala

It isn’t every night that “celebrities” like Ashlee Simpson, Lauren Conrad and the Jonas Brothers descend on Washington, D.C., though many of them match the intellectual level of our chief executive (a frightening but true thought).

Those stars - along with Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Marcia Cross and Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick - were guests at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night in Washington.

President George W. Bush and Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson poked fun at themselves, the celebrities, and all three presidential candidates in front of an audience of the Washington press corps at the annual gala.

Dubs

“Pamela Anderson and Mitt Romney in the same room?” Bush said. “Isn’t that one of the signs of the apocalypse?”

Bush also joked about his daughter Jenna Bush, and her May 10 wedding to fiancé Henry Hager - likening her to John McCain.

“Senator [John] McCain’s not here,” the president told the audience.

“He probably wanted to distance himself from me a little bit. You know, he’s not alone. Jenna’s moving out too.”

Jenna Bush, for her part, has indicated that she may not support McCain in this November’s election. Henry Hager is a former aide to Karl Rove.

President Bush later added, “Hillary Clinton couldn’t get in because of sniper fire and Sen. [Barack] Obama’s at church.”

During Craig Ferguson’s speech, he joked to the president, “By the way, Mr. President, you were fantastic on Deal or No Deal.”

Bush Confronts Difficult Policy, Budget Issues

With all the attention paid to the Ashley Alexandra Dupre / Kristen / Eliot Spitzer sex scandal and resignation, we now offer a much lighter story.

There’s no denying that President George W. Bush has faced tough economic and diplomatic issues - with limited success - in the past seven years.

But, proving that no matter how much money or power you have, a father will have no control or say when it comes to his daughter’s wedding, these past issues are nothing compared to Jenna Bush’s upcoming nuptials to Henry Hager.

“I had to face some difficult spending decisions and I’ve had to conduct sensitive diplomacy. That’s called planning for a wedding,” George W. Bush said, eliciting laughs from the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

George W. Bush, Jenna Bush

Last month, when asked by a reporter how the planning of the Henry Hager-Jenna Bush wedding is going, the leader of the free world quipped:

“They’re letting me spend money, that’s how it’s going.”

Classic. Jenna Bush is set to wed Henry Hager at her parents’ Texas ranch on May 10. The couple’s engagement was announced in August.

Jenna Bush Wedding a Mother-Daughter Affair

From the lighter side of politics, it seems even President George W. Bush can’t escape the paternal rite of passage of shelling out big bucks for his daughter’s wedding - all while being shut out of the planning.

In preparing for the upcoming wedding of his daughter, Jenna Bush, and her fiance, Henry Hager, the Prez was asked how the planning is coming along.

His classic response: “It’s coming along like I have nothing to say about it, that’s how it’s coming.”

“Really?” asked Today’s Ann Curry. “They’re not letting you do anything?”

“They’re letting me spend money,” George W. Bush said.

Par for the course for a father of the bride, we’d say.

Henry Hager, Jenna Bush

Henry Hager, 29, will wed Jenna Bush, 26, this spring.

For her part, First Lady Laura Bush told The Washington Post:

“Jenna and I have been having a really good time planning the wedding … It will be small, private, just what Jenna wants. It’ll be lovely and simple.”

Jenna Bush and Henry Hager tie the knot May 10 at the president’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, according to the White House.

The couple’s engagement was announced in August.

The President may experience deja vu when Jenna’s twin sister, Barbara, gets engaged. Though he may be numb to the process by then.

As for potential future First Daughter weddings, only Barack Obama is off the hook (for awhile, anyway), with his girls only nine and six.

Both Chelsea Clinton (27) and Meghan McCain (23), on the other hand, could set their families back big bucks any year now!
